And by the time we reach our 40s, certain movies have become part of our lexicon. If you don't "speak" Fight Club or The Matrix or Big Lebowski, it's like trying to get around Paris without even bothering to learn a few words in French. We understand each other because we've all seen the same movies and embraced the same life lessons. Gentlemen, if you're in your 40s and you can't effortlessly quote from any of these movies, it's time for some Netflix homework. And once you've finished your assignment, you'll be good to go and try out the 40 things you need to do once you turn 40.

What makes this movie so infinitely quotable is that it works in so many different contexts. Every man, at least once in his life, has muttered in a bad Cuban accent, "Say hello to my little friend!" And 100% of the time they're not talking about a Colt AR-15 with a grenade launcher. And on the subject of Al Pacino movies, you should see who was originally up for his career-making role in The Godfather.

What gives The Shawshank Redemption staying power is that it perfectly balances both emotional worlds, the immature and the introspective. You've got your "Man up and vanished like a fart in the wind" and "What is your malfunction, you fat barrel of monkey spunk?" But you've also got your reflective, life-weary quotes like, "Get busy living or get busy dying." Quoting this movie lets you be a buffoon and a poet.

Of all the great John Wayne movies, why this one? For one and only quote. "That'll be the day!" Whether someone is asking him to quit or hoping he'll die, this was the Duke's perfectly flippant and defiant response to life's haters. Yeah, you'll get your wish, f*cker. But not today.

Emma Thompson, who has spoken out about ageism in Hollywood, is starring in a critically acclaimed new Hulu film, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a sex comedy led by the 63-year-old actor. Luckily, there have been a few similar movies recently; as such, here are some of the best romance movies with women over 40 as leads.

In 2003's Something's Gotta Give, Diane Keaton was 56-years-old. The Nancy Meyers film centered on playwright Erica Berry (Keaton), her daughter Marin (Amanda Peet), and 60-something record company owner Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson). Harry only dates women under 30 and his path crossed with Erica's when he shows up with Marin, his girlfriend and her daughter at her beach house. While he and Marin are having foreplay he has a heart attack. The doctor tells him to stay put while he recovers, and he ends up staying with Erica where they slowly bond and find love with each other later in life. The storyline, in which an older man learns to love women his old age, is perfectly appropriate for one of the best romance movies with women over 40.

But what we're trying to say is that even though you guys might be really bummed that Netflix has pulled almost 80 movies from its streaming service starting today, there's some good news. Netflix is also adding over 40 movies to its lineup. Sure, we're only getting about half the amount of movies that are being taken away from us (we did the complicated math), but it's higher than zero (again, more math). And more than one of the new movies stars Lindsay Lohan in her prime, so that's something to be pumped about, right?

Last week, Netflix unveiled its new roster of movies and TV shows for the month of April. Not long after, the streaming giant announced during the AnimeJapan 2021 expo that it will be expanding its anime category with over 40 new titles set to be added this year.

Discussing the choice of films and the upcoming initiative focusing on nostalgia, Dr Wing Yee Cheung, senior lecturer in psychology and researcher on nostalgia at the University of Winchester, said: These movies are embedded with sensory memories of when we first watched them and whom we watched them with, which are key triggers of nostalgia.

Audiences will soon get to check out The Amusement Park, a horror film by George A. Romero that was lost for over 40 years. Romero sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 77, after a career full of both highs and lows. Romero made some of the greatest horror movies ever, but he also repeatedly ran into issues getting projects funded, due to a dislike of working within the Hollywood studio system. Romero wanted to retain creative control of his work, which studios rarely offered.

It's no secret that Hollywood is not kind to women over 40. It's a well known fact that there are more leading roles for men than women in Hollywood, so movies starring women are in the minority, ad movies starring women over the age of 40 are even more rare. Still, that doesn't mean there aren't some great ones that deserve your attention, like these 19 movies starring women over 40, all of which are worth seeing.

A recent study from USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism on 414 movies, TV shows, and digital series that aired from September of 2014 to August of 2015, only 21.4 percent of film characters over 40 were for women, meaning that there are three times as many roles available to men over that age than to women. And that's just speaking roles.

Furthermore, you'll notice a trend among these 19 movies starring women over 40 is that a lot of the roles featured are mothers, very few are romantic leads, and even fewer have love interests that are younger than them. On the flip side, if we were rounding up movies starring men over 40, you can bet that they would be a mix of single men, married men, and single fathers, all would be romantic leads, and none of them would have a love interest older than them.

Movies starring women over 40 still have a long way to go, but at least we know there's more than enough proof right here that people actually want to see those movies. We just have to spread the word.

The United Kingdom is preparing to enter another lockdown, and since its residents can't really travel anywhere, they're getting the next best thing: a Google Maps "virtual movie hunt." Over 40 beloved British movies have been hidden across the Google map of the U.K., and are available to watch for free to any film fan that finds them. This includes institutional British classics like Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit as well as other acclaimed films, including Skyfall and Shaun of the Dead.

Google has launched a"virtual movie hunt" in collaboration with the British Film Institute, ahead of their Google Pixel presents Mobile Cinema campaign later this month. The virtual movie hunt consists of 40 beloved British classics that have been scattered across the Google Maps of the United Kingdom, with clues in relation to the locations of the films set to be released ahead of the search throughout this month. Titles like Skyfall, Shaun of the Dead, Phantom Thread, and Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit will be featured in this Google Maps movies hunt.

Google and BFI specifically chose movies that will trigger nostalgia within film fans, according to Dr. Wing Yee Cheung, senior lecturer in psychology and researcher on nostalgia at the University of Winchester. "These movies are embedded with sensory memories of when we first watched them and whom we watched them with, which are key triggers of nostalgia," Cheung said.
